What is the difference between a common and a melanistic pheasant?

The melanistic pheasant is a dark, melanistic variety of the common pheasant: dark plumage with a blue-green sheen, a heavy build comparable to the common bird, highly prized on driven shoots for how discreet it is in cover. Not to be confused with the Chinese-type pheasant, which is lighter and recognisable by its white neck ring. Each strain has its own detailed page on our site. Common and melanistic are sold at the same price, 14.90 € each as adults, to order and delivered live throughout France.

GIBIS offers four types of pheasant: the FAISAN PUR CHASSE® (exclusive strain selected for hunting), the French pheasant (hardy and versatile French strain), the Chinese-type pheasant (nervier, fast flight) and the melanistic pheasant (dark plumage, lively behaviour). Each strain has its own characteristics in terms of flight, hardiness and behaviour. How do I raise breeding pheasants?

Accepted Answer

Rearing breeding pheasants requires spacious aviaries (minimum 10 m² per pair), a diet rich in protein and insects, and rigorous health monitoring. GIBIS supplies breeding pairs selected on criteria of morphology, plumage and behaviour. Do you sell breeding pheasant hens?

Yes, occasionally. Breeding pheasant hens are not part of our regular catalogue: their availability depends on the season and on the needs of our own breeding stock. At GIBIS, the adult hunting pheasant (at least 20 weeks) costs 14.90 € each in the common, melanistic or Chinese strain, 16.50 € for a cock only, and 19.00 € each in the exclusive PUR CHASSE® strain; the 14-week poult starts at 11.60 € (13.50 € in PUR CHASSE®), plus 0.55 € per additional week of age. How much does a batch of 100 hunting pheasants cost?

Accepted Answer

At catalogue price, 100 adult common pheasants of 20 weeks come to €1,490 (14.90 € each), 100 PUR CHASSE® pheasants to €1,900 and 100 poults of 14 weeks to €1,160. A sliding-scale price is set in the quote according to quantity, strain, age and period; transport is extra, except for collection from the farm at Chatte. How much does a whole pheasant cost?

Accepted Answer

Two different markets need to be distinguished. The "whole pheasant" from the poulterer or butcher is a slaughtered, oven-ready bird whose price (often 12 to €20 each) belongs to the food trade. GIBIS does not sell game for consumption: we breed live pheasants for hunting and restocking, from 11.60 € to 19.00 € each depending on the strain and age. Is there a minimum order for pheasants?

Accepted Answer

No, there is no imposed minimum order: we serve an individual coming to collect a few birds at the farm just as readily as an ACCA ordering 300 poults. In practice, delivery to your ground only becomes worthwhile from a few dozen birds upwards, or by joining a round already scheduled in your area; below that, collection at Chatte is the most economical solution. Volume discounts are set out in your quote according to quantity.

How long does it take to receive pheasants?

Accepted Answer

Allow at least three to four weeks between the order and the return to the wild for adult pheasants ready to be shot, and longer for large opening-day volumes or for the PUR CHASSE® strain, which is produced in limited numbers. Poults for summer returns to the wild are booked in the spring, before the end of May, for delivery from June to August. Batches go out in booking order: the earlier you call 04 76 38 31 01, the more choice you have of strain, age and date.

When should you order your hunting pheasants?

Accepted Answer

As early as possible, because batches leave in order of reservation. Summer poults are ordered in spring, before the end of May; adult pheasants at least three to four weeks before the date of the return to the wild, and from spring onwards for large opening-day volumes or for the PUR CHASSE® strain, which is produced in limited quantities. The order becomes firm on receipt of your written order and a 30% deposit. Is a deposit required to book pheasants?

Accepted Answer

Yes: an order is registered on receipt of your written order — by letter or e-mail — together with a deposit of 30% of the amount including VAT, as provided in our general terms and conditions of sale. It is this deposit that secures your birds, the age class requested and your delivery slot; unless otherwise agreed, the balance is paid before the birds leave. Do you sell pheasants to private individuals?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Private individuals, hunting clubs, ACCAs, federations or landowners: everyone buys at the same catalogue price, 14.90 € per adult pheasant in the common, dark or Chinese strain and 19.00 € in PUR CHASSE®, with no minimum order. For a few birds, collection from the farm in Chatte (Isère), by appointment, is the simplest and cheapest option, and every bird leaves with its health certificate. Question 14

Can I keep a pheasant at home?

Accepted Answer

Yes, under certain conditions. Keeping pheasants is unrestricted below 100 birds held for non-commercial purposes; beyond that, or for sale, the holding must be registered and comply with biosecurity measures. Every keeper must declare their birds to the authorities (DDPP). GIBIS also sells to private individuals, from just a few birds, with health certificates, for collection from the farm at Chatte by appointment; check with your DDT(M)/DDPP before setting up an aviary, then call 04 76 38 31 01 for availability.

At what age should I return a hunting pheasant to the wild?

Accepted Answer

Pheasants are available from 14 weeks, the age at which they have developed their full plumage and flight muscles. For adult birds returned to the wild for shooting, allow at least 3 to 4 weeks before the opening for acclimatisation; for summer restocking with young poults, the return to the wild takes place much earlier, 6 to 12 weeks before the opening — see our restocking page. We deliver both age classes, poults from 11.60 € and adults from 14.90 € each: give us your return-to-the-wild date on 04 76 38 31 01 and we will match the age and delivery to it.

At what age do you deliver pheasants?

Accepted Answer

We deliver two age classes. 14-week-old poults (11.60 € in the common strain, 13.50 € in PUR CHASSE®, plus 0.55 € per additional week of age) leave from June to August for summer returns to the wild and restocking. Adult pheasants of at least 20 weeks (14.90 € each, 19.00 € in PUR CHASSE®), with full plumage and flight muscles built up, are delivered for the hunting season. Can I collect my pheasants directly from the farm at Chatte?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Collection takes place at the farm, 249 route de Lyon, 38160 Chatte, in the Isère, Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and by appointment — the birds are prepared in advance. Catalogue prices are ex-farm, so you save the transport cost. Bring a ventilated vehicle and crates suitable for live birds; we can lend you ours, against a deposit and to be returned. Otherwise we deliver throughout France in our fitted vehicles, carriage extra.
