Red and grey partridges

Quality breeding in large natural aviaries

Red and grey partridges

Red partridge

The red partridge (Alectoris rufa) is one of the most emblematic game birds of southern France. Our red partridges are raised in large open aviaries fitted with dense natural vegetation (broom, box, tall grasses) that reproduces their Mediterranean habitat. Our carefully selected bloodlines produce birds with powerful flight and a wild temperament.

Large planted aviaries
Multi-hectare aviaries with natural plant cover, allowing birds to develop their flight musculature.
Selected bloodlines
Rigorous selection on morphology, plumage, behaviour and flight ability.
Weight & size
Birds of 350 to 450 g at release age, with the characteristic red and grey plumage of the species.
Hunting and restocking
Suited equally to release shooting and medium to long-term restocking programmes.
Red partridges for sale
Available from 12 weeks in season. Volume discounts. Breeding stock to order in spring.

Grey partridge

The grey partridge (Perdix perdix) has become rare in many regions of France, a victim of changing agricultural practices. GIBIS is one of the few breeders maintaining a breeding herd of grey partridges from pure French bloodlines. Our birds are raised under strictly controlled conditions to preserve the original genetic characteristics of the species.

Pure French bloodline
French genetics preserved without crossing with foreign bloodlines, guaranteeing species authenticity.
Heritage species
Active contribution to preserving the French grey partridge, a declining species nationally.
Specialist breeding
Specific conditions: low-density aviaries, diet rich in insects and wild seeds.
Restocking programme
Birds particularly suited to reintroduction programmes in cereal plains and bocage.
Technical support
GIBIS assists clients in setting up restocking programmes with monitoring of released populations.

Chukar partridge

The chukar partridge (Alectoris chukar) originates from Central Asia and the Middle East, perfectly adapted to rocky, arid and mountainous terrain. Larger than the red partridge, the chukar is distinguished by its black and white striped flanks and pronounced facial mask. GIBIS offers farmed chukars for restocking dry and rugged territories, as well as for sporting shooting on hilly ground.

Adaptation to arid terrain

Naturally adapted to rocky areas, dry slopes and rugged relief unfavourable to other partridges.

Superior size

Larger bird than the red partridge (400 to 550 g), offering substantial game appreciated by hunters.

Powerful flight

Fast, low flight along slopes, particularly spectacular on mountainous terrain.

Availability to order

Breeding red-legged partridges in the Isère since 1951

Our red-legged partridge farm

Our red-legged partridge farm is run at Chatte, in the Isère, on the 70 hectares of the family holding, 15 of them under aviaries. The whole chain takes place on site: breeding stock, laying, incubation, brooder house and growing aviaries. Breeding pairs are matched in late autumn and lay from April to July; the eggs are collected several times a day, graded, then incubated for 24 days at 37.7 °C before transfer to the hatcher. The young partridges spend their first three to four weeks in a heated brooder house — 35 °C under the brooder at the start, then about 3 °C less each week — before moving out to the outdoor aviaries at around 5 to 6 weeks. That is where the quality of a hunting bird is decided: our open-air aviaries are planted with broom, box, brambles and tall grasses, with perches and dusting areas, and are run at low density (fewer than one bird per 2 m²). This husbandry avoids feather pecking without the systematic use of bits, preserves the plumage and lets the young birds run and fly until they genuinely build their flight muscles. Feeding follows age: high-protein starter crumbs (around 28 %) for the first four weeks, grower feed (22-24 %) up to 8 weeks, then a 16-18 % finisher supplemented with wheat, cracked maize, greenstuff and grit — a regime that prepares the bird to find its own food after release. See also our guide to a successful release and our advice on feeding and habitat management.

Large planted aviaries
Open-air aviaries with natural cover (broom, box, brambles, grasses): the birds run, perch and fly before they are sold.
Low density
Fewer than one bird per 2 m² in the growing aviaries: less stress, less feather pecking, intact plumage and a wary temperament preserved.
14 weeks minimum
No red-legged partridge is sold under 14 weeks. Below that age a bird has neither the flight muscle nor the feeding independence a release requires.
Stage-by-stage feeding
Starter at around 28 % protein, grower 22-24 %, finisher 16-18 % supplemented with wheat, cracked maize, greenstuff and grit.
Selection of breeding stock
A pure strain with no crossing; breeders chosen on conformation, collar and flank markings, wary temperament and flight quality, with bloodlines rotated to avoid inbreeding.
Health and biosecurity
Veterinary supervision, regular faecal examinations, coccidiosis and gapeworm prophylaxis, resting and disinfection of pens between batches, farm register and health certificate with every consignment.

Direct sale, ex-farm

Red-legged partridges for sale to individuals, hunting associations and shooting clubs

Yes: we sell red-legged partridges to private individuals as readily as to ACCA hunting associations, shooting clubs, private shoots, federations and shooting grounds. There is no middleman and no online order form — everything is handled directly with the farm, by telephone on 04 76 38 31 01 or by e-mail, which lets us match the strain, the age and the delivery date to your ground. For an individual, the minimum order is one covey (9 birds + 1 adult leader, 102,00 €) or 10 birds at 10,30 €; adult red-legged partridges for the season are 11,40 € each from August to December, with prices falling from a hundred birds upwards. Two ways to take delivery: collection on site at Chatte, in the Isère, by appointment (free of charge — bring ventilated transport crates and a well-aired vehicle), or delivery in our own fitted vehicles, quoted according to destination and shared across our seasonal rounds. An order becomes firm on receipt of a 30 % deposit, the balance being settled on collection or delivery; every batch travels with its health documents. As regards keeping birds, an individual holding fewer than 100 birds for non-commercial purposes remains under the free regime, but the farm register and biosecurity rules still apply: the details are on our small game regulations page. If you would rather start your own breeding stock, we also sell partridge hatching eggs, and the grey partridge of pure French strain has its own page. Many of our customers round out a partridge release with common pheasant: our guide to choosing your pheasant strain will help you make up the batch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Red or grey partridge: which should I choose for my territory?
The choice depends on your biotope. The red partridge adapts to dry, Mediterranean terrain, slopes and garrigue. The grey partridge prefers cereal plains, bocage and the temperate zones of northern France. GIBIS can advise you based on the characteristics of your territory.
What is the price of a red partridge?
A red partridge costs 11,40 € each as an adult (August to December) and 10,30 € at 14 weeks at GIBIS; a covey of 9 birds plus 1 leader bird is 102,00 €. Volume pricing according to quantity, with birds raised in large aviaries under natural plant cover, guaranteeing behaviour suited to release.
How do I achieve a successful partridge restocking?
Successful restocking requires quality birds raised in semi-natural conditions, a prepared territory (cover, grass strips, hedgerows), and an appropriate release schedule. Partridges should be released in groups (coveys of 15 to 20 birds) to encourage social behaviour and survival.
Do you sell partridge eggs?
Yes, GIBIS offers fertile red and grey partridge eggs, available April to July. Our eggs come from selected breeding pairs and are dispatched within 48 hours in isothermal packaging. Hatch rate reaches 70 to 85% under optimal incubation conditions. Contact us for prices and availability.
What is the difference between red, grey and chukar partridges?
The red partridge (Alectoris rufa) is the emblematic species of southern France, adapted to dry and Mediterranean terrain. The grey partridge (Perdix perdix) prefers cereal plains and bocage in the north. The chukar partridge (Alectoris chukar) is larger, adapted to rocky and mountainous terrain. GIBIS offers all three species subject to availability.
What is the price of a hunting red partridge?
From 10,30 € each at 14 weeks and 11,40 € for an adult during the hunting season (August to December), with volume pricing according to quantity. Flight behaviour is guaranteed by rearing in large planted aviaries with natural cover. Personalised quote by phone on 04 76 38 31 01 or by email.
Do you deliver partridges to northern France and Picardy?
Yes, GIBIS delivers red and grey partridges across all of France, including Hauts-de-France (Nord, Picardie, Pas-de-Calais). The grey partridge is particularly well suited to the cereal plains of northern France.
Do you deliver partridges to Belgium or Switzerland?
GIBIS regularly delivers partridges to Belgium and Switzerland. Belgium and Luxembourg being in the EU, formalities are simplified. For Switzerland, we handle the health certificates and customs documents. Contact us for a quote including international transport.
Red partridge: what are its characteristics for rearing and release?
The adult red partridge weighs 380 to 500 g, runs more than it flies and breaks away in a powerful, short flight when pushed — behaviour that GIBIS preserves in planted aviaries with natural cover. Bred in the Isère since 1951, it reaches release maturity from 14 weeks.
How much does a live partridge cost?
At GIBIS, a live red-legged partridge costs 10.30 € each at 14 weeks and 11.40 € as an adult during the hunting season; the grey partridge is 10.60 € (14-15 weeks) and 11.70 € as an adult. A covey of 9 birds + 1 leader is 102.00 € (red-legged) or 105.00 € (grey), with discounts based on quantity. Birds reared in large planted aviaries; quotes at 04 76 38 31 01.
Where can I find partridges?
GIBIS has been breeding red-legged, grey and chukar partridges in Chatte, in the Isère, since 1951, and delivers them live throughout France as well as to Belgium and Switzerland. To find hunting or restocking partridges, contact the farm at 04 76 38 31 01 or by e-mail: transport in our specially fitted vehicles, health certificates provided.
Can partridges be reared?
Yes. Rearing partridges is possible for leisure as well as for restocking, provided the birds are declared and biosecurity rules are followed; below 100 birds held for non-commercial purposes, the regime is unrestricted. Partridges require low-density aviaries, a diet rich in insects and seeds, and rigorous health monitoring. GIBIS supplies breeding stock and fertile eggs and provides support in setting up restocking programmes.
How much does a partridge egg cost?
The price of fertile partridge eggs (red-legged or grey) is set on request, depending on the strain, the quantity and availability during the laying season (April to July). Eggs are collected daily and shipped within 48 hours in insulated packaging. The grey partridge, of pure French strain, is available in limited quantity. Contact GIBIS at 04 76 38 31 01 for prices and reservations.
Do you sell red-legged partridge hatching eggs?
Yes. GIBIS sells hatching eggs of red-legged partridge and, in more limited numbers, of grey partridge of pure French strain, from April to July. They come from breeding pairs selected on conformation, behaviour and fertility, are collected daily and dispatched within 48 hours in insulated packaging. Production is seasonal and serves our own hatchery first: book early, ideally from January, on 04 76 38 31 01 or by e-mail.
How much does a partridge hatching egg cost?
Partridge hatching eggs are sold at a price set on request, falling with quantity, according to the strain (red-legged or grey) and to the collection week within the laying season, from April to July. Grey partridge, available in small numbers, should be booked from January. Call 04 76 38 31 01 for a quotation: we only confirm an order once the eggs are genuinely available.
How long does a partridge egg take to incubate?
About 24 days (23 to 25 depending on the strain), at 37.7 °C in a forced-air incubator, at 45 to 55 % humidity rising to 65-75 % for the last three days. Turning (4 to 6 times a day) stops at transfer to the hatcher around day 21; two candlings, around day 7 and day 14, allow clear eggs and dead-in-shell embryos to be removed. Under controlled conditions, hatch rates reach 70 to 85 %. Our full protocol is set out on the pheasant hatching eggs page and transfers directly to partridge.
Do you sell red-legged partridges to private individuals?
Yes. GIBIS sells red-legged partridges to individuals as readily as to hunting associations, shooting clubs, private shoots and federations, with no middleman and the same volume discounts. For an individual, the minimum order is one covey (9 birds + 1 leader, 102,00 €) or 10 birds at 10,30 €; adults for the season are 11,40 € each from August to December. There is no online ordering: everything is handled by telephone on 04 76 38 31 01 or by e-mail, with collection at Chatte, in the Isère, or delivery in our fitted vehicles.
How does buying red-legged partridges work: deposit, collection, delivery?
You call or write to us with the species, age, quantity and week you want; we confirm availability and draw up a quotation including transport. The order becomes firm on receipt of a 30 % deposit, the balance being settled on collection or delivery. Collection is free ex-farm at Chatte, in the Isère, by appointment — bring ventilated transport crates and a well-aired vehicle. Otherwise we deliver in our own fitted vehicles in France, Belgium and Switzerland, with the batch’s health documents.
May a private individual legally keep red-legged partridges bought from a game farm?
Yes, subject to conditions. Below 100 birds kept for non-commercial purposes the regime remains free; above that, or if birds are sold, the establishment must be declared. In every case, keep a farm register, retain the health certificate supplied with the batch and observe the avian influenza biosecurity measures. Releasing birds on a shooting ground is a separate matter, governed by the management plan and the local shooting rules: the key points are set out on our small game regulations page.
How is your red-legged partridge farm run?
Our red-legged partridge farm is run entirely at Chatte, in the Isère: breeding stock selected within a pure strain, laying from April to July, 24 days of incubation, a heated brooder house for the first three to four weeks, then open-air planted aviaries run at low density (fewer than one bird per 2 m²). Feeding follows the stage — starter at around 28 % protein, grower 22-24 %, finisher 16-18 % supplemented with wheat, cracked maize, greenstuff and grit. Health monitoring (faecal examinations, coccidiosis and gapeworm prophylaxis, resting periods between batches) is carried out with our veterinary surgeon.
At what age do you sell your red-legged partridges?
At 14 weeks minimum: no red-legged partridge leaves the farm below that age. Before 14 weeks a bird has neither the flight muscle nor the feeding independence needed to survive a release, and the recovery rate collapses. Coveys (9 birds + 1 leader) are available in August, and adult red-legged partridges from August to December for shooting releases.
