Mouflon

The European mouflon

The Mediterranean mouflon (Ovis gmelini musimon, formerly Ovis ammon musimon) is the smallest of Europe's wild sheep and the wild ancestor of the domestic sheep. Native to Corsica and Sardinia, it has been successfully introduced into many mountain ranges on the continent since the 18th century. Hardy, gregarious and remarkably adaptable, it thrives equally on dry, rocky terrain and in large wooded parks — making it a species of choice for wildlife parks, game enclosures and big-game management projects.

The ram and its horns
Only the ram carries the large spiral horns, which grow throughout its life and make it possible to estimate its age. A mature trophy frequently exceeds 60 cm.
Size
Rams weigh 35 to 55 kg and stand 70 to 90 cm at the withers; ewes are markedly lighter, at 25 to 35 kg, and generally have no horns or only short ones.
Coat and saddle
Reddish-brown coat turning dark brown in winter, with a pale belly and lower legs. The adult ram displays a characteristic pale patch on its flank, the “saddle”.
Annual cycle
Rut from October to December, lambing in March–April after five months' gestation, most often one lamb per ewe.

Our mouflon

Our mouflons are raised in large enclosures, in structured groups that reproduce the species' natural social organisation: herds of ewes and lambs, with rams kept apart outside the rutting season. This husbandry produces animals that are calm to handle yet keep their hardiness and wariness once returned to the wild. Each animal comes with its health certificate; we also provide the traceability documents required for your introduction application.

Assembled lots
We put together lots to suit your project: founding groups of ewes plus a ram, young animals to build up a population, or trophy rams.
Health and traceability
Farm no. 38001, veterinary, health and environmental approvals. Health certificate, TRACES documents for export and supporting invoice provided.
Specialised transport
Delivery in our own vehicles fitted out for big game throughout France, and road or air transport to the required standards to the European Union.
Live arrival guaranteed
As with all our game, live arrival is guaranteed. The conditions are set out in our general terms and conditions of sale.

Establishing mouflon on your ground

The mouflon needs space, relief or cover, and an accessible water point. It is a gregarious species: you never introduce a single animal on its own. A coherent founder group, an acclimatisation enclosure and a period of quiet after settling determine the success of the operation far more than the number of animals introduced. If your hunting ground is wooded rather than mountainous, GIBIS also supplies the other live big game: our French roe deer for restocking, delivered subject to capture.

Suitable habitat

Dry relief, rocky slopes, heathland and large wooded parks. The mouflon copes poorly with permanently waterlogged ground and with closed habitats lacking open areas.

Founding group

Plan for a core group of several ewes with one or two rams rather than isolated animals: social cohesion determines whether they settle on the ground.

Acclimatisation enclosure

An acclimatisation enclosure at the introduction site greatly reduces dispersal and mortality in the first weeks.

Authorisations

Introducing big game into the wild and keeping it in enclosures are both regulated and subject to authorisation. Check the applicable framework with your DDT (departmental directorate of territories) and your departmental hunters' federation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a mouflon cost?
The price depends on sex, age, horn development in rams and the composition of the lot. Mouflon are sold on quotation: contact us stating the number of animals, their sex and the intended use (park, hunting enclosure, restocking) and we will draw up a tailored proposal, transport included.
Can you buy a live mouflon in France?
Yes. Selling and keeping live mouflon is possible within the applicable regulatory framework: keeping them in a park or enclosure falls under an authorisation regime, and introduction into the wild requires an application to the DDT, generally examined after consulting the departmental hunters' federation. We provide the health certificate and the traceability documents needed for your application.
How many mouflon do you need to start a population?
The mouflon is a highly gregarious species: you never introduce a single animal on its own. A coherent founding group — several ewes accompanied by one or two rams — gives far better results than the same number of animals introduced separately. Sizing then depends on the area, the habitat and your objective; we discuss it with you before drawing up the quote.
What is the difference between a mouflon and a sheep?
The Mediterranean mouflon is the wild ancestor of the domestic sheep. It differs from it in its coat of reddish-brown hair rather than wool, its slimmer and more athletic build and, in the ram, its large spiral horns. It retains wild behaviour: constant vigilance, rapid flight and strong attachment to the group.
When do you deliver mouflon?
Mouflon are mainly delivered outside the rutting season and outside late gestation, autumn and late winter being the most favourable windows for settling them in. Availability varies from year to year depending on births: we advise booking several months in advance.
Do you deliver mouflon abroad?
Yes. We export live game throughout the European Union, by road in our specially fitted vehicles or by air in accordance with IATA standards, with a health certificate and TRACES documents. Mouflon are among the species we regularly deliver to Central Europe and the Balkans.
