Wild rabbits

Pure French rabbits for territory restocking

Wild rabbits

Pure French rabbits

GIBIS offers pure French wild rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), caught in the wild in areas where the species is healthy. Unlike farmed rabbits, our wild rabbits possess the innate behaviours essential for survival in the natural environment: burrow digging, vigilance against predators and ability to feed on local vegetation.

Certified wild origin
Each batch comes with an origin certificate attesting to the wild provenance of the animals.
Natural behaviour
Intact survival instincts: burrow digging, flight from predators, autonomous feeding.
Health selection
Only animals in perfect health are retained for sale.

Vaccination and disease prevention

Myxomatosis and viral haemorrhagic disease (VHD) are the two main threats to wild rabbit populations in France. GIBIS systematically vaccinates all its rabbits against both diseases before delivery. This vaccination, carried out by an approved vet, guarantees optimal protection and maximises the success of your restocking operation.

Myxomatosis vaccination

Licensed vaccine administered at least 15 days before release to allow full immunisation.

VHD vaccination

Protection against viral haemorrhagic disease (VHD1 and VHD2), most recent strains.

Veterinary certificate

Vaccination certificate issued by an approved vet, accompanying every batch delivered.

Buying from GIBIS

Wild rabbits for sale: 2026 prices, lead times and ordering terms

Looking for wild rabbits for sale, vaccinated and ready to release? GIBIS sells its wild rabbits singly or by the batch: 16,30 € for a vaccinated 2.5-month kitten (myxomatosis + RHD), 49,50 € for a breeding pair (1 male + 1 female) and 75,00 € for a trio (1 male + 2 females), with prices falling from restocking volumes upwards. We supply hunting associations, village shooting clubs, game management groups, private shoots, estates and departmental federations, as well as private individuals holding shooting rights. Prices are ex-farm at Chatte, in the Isère (38160); transport is quoted according to destination and carried out in our own fitted vehicles. There is no online ordering at GIBIS, and that is deliberate: a batch of rabbits is settled over the telephone, from your acreage, your soil type and the number of warrens available — which is what prevents the oversized orders that make operations fail. Call 04 76 38 31 01 or write to gibis@gibis.fr: tailored quotation within 24 hours.

Getting the operation right

Restocking with wild rabbits: preparing the ground before you order

A wild rabbit restocking operation is won before the animals arrive. The rabbit is the one small game species that needs immediate underground shelter: released on bare ground, it is taken by predators within days. The rule we repeat to every customer fits in a single sentence — build the warrens first, order the rabbits afterwards. Allow one artificial warren for 3 to 5 rabbits released, warrens 100 to 200 metres apart so that colonisation spreads from one to the next, and one warren per 2 to 3 hectares of genuinely suitable ground. Favour light, free-draining soils and well-exposed banks, away from flood-prone areas where the burrows drown in winter. The construction details — a structured pile 4 to 5 metres across, pallets or pipes at the base to keep the tunnels open, stones and soil on top, several entrances sheltered from the prevailing wind — are set out in our guide to feeding and habitat management; the full method, including densities, timing and predator control, is detailed in achieving a successful game release. Finally, check what applies where you are before ordering: the provenance and traceability obligations are summarised on our small game release regulations page.

Warrens first

One artificial warren for 3 to 5 rabbits released, built and settled several weeks before the animals are delivered.

A string of warrens, not a single point

Warrens 100 to 200 metres apart, one per 2 to 3 suitable hectares: the rabbits colonise step by step without crossing open ground.

Predation controlled beforehand

Licensed trapping of foxes and mustelids started before the release, plus temporary netting around the warren for the first 8 to 10 days.

Food and cover close by

Supplementary feeding a few metres from the warren and low cover (brambles, hedges, rough ground) so the rabbits never have to go far.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a wild rabbit cost?
The price of a wild rabbit varies depending on quantity ordered, time of year and capture conditions. GIBIS offers volume pricing for large orders. Contact us for a personalised quote adapted to your restocking programme.
Where can I buy wild rabbits in France?
GIBIS is one of the main suppliers of pure French wild rabbits. We deliver across the country, including Brittany, Normandy, the South-West and all other regions. Each batch comes with veterinary certificates and vaccination records.
How do I achieve successful wild rabbit restocking?
Successful restocking rests on three pillars: choosing quality wild animals (never farmed), preparing the ground with artificial warrens, and respecting optimal release periods (autumn or late winter). GIBIS supports you in defining your programme with post-release monitoring.
What is the best time to release wild rabbits?
Optimal release periods are autumn (September-November) and late winter (February-March). Autumn releases allow animals to settle before winter and reproduce in spring. Late winter releases benefit from spring breeding dynamics.
What vaccinations do wild rabbits need?
GIBIS systematically vaccinates all its rabbits against myxomatosis and viral haemorrhagic disease (VHD1 and VHD2). Vaccination is performed by an approved vet at least 15 days before release to guarantee full immunisation. A veterinary certificate accompanies every batch delivered.
Do you deliver wild rabbits to Brittany?
Yes, GIBIS delivers wild rabbits across all of France, including Brittany, Normandy, Pays de la Loire and all other regions. Our specialist vehicles ensure transport under the best animal welfare conditions, regardless of distance. Many Breton hunting clubs and ACCAs trust us for their restocking programmes.
Do you sell wild rabbits to private individuals?
Yes, GIBIS sells its wild rabbits to private individuals as well as to hunting clubs (ACCAs) and federations: 16,30 € for a vaccinated young rabbit, 49,50 € for a breeding pair, 75,00 € for a trio (1 buck + 2 does), with volume pricing according to quantity. All are vaccinated against VHD and myxomatosis and delivered throughout France.
How do I order wild rabbits from GIBIS?
Orders are placed by telephone on 04 76 38 31 01 or by e-mail to gibis@gibis.fr: there is no online ordering at GIBIS. We take down the size of your ground, the soil type, the number of warrens already built and the release date you want, then draw up a quotation within 24 hours, transport included. The 2026 prices are 16,30 € for a vaccinated 2.5-month kitten, 49,50 € for a breeding pair and 75,00 € for a trio, falling with volume.
How long does it take to receive an order of wild rabbits?
Allow 2 to 4 weeks in general between approval of the quotation and delivery. That lead time is not administrative: myxomatosis and RHD vaccination must be carried out at least 15 days before the animals leave, so that immunity is complete at the time of release. In the peak restocking season, large volumes are booked several months ahead; call us as soon as your release calendar is fixed, on 04 76 38 31 01.
Are artificial warrens essential before releasing wild rabbits?
No regulation requires them, but in practice they are the condition for success: the wild rabbit needs immediate underground shelter, and a release on bare ground almost always fails. Allow one artificial warren for 3 to 5 rabbits released, 100 to 200 metres apart, on light free-draining soil, built several weeks before delivery. If your ground already has occupied natural burrows, bramble thickets or old stone piles that can be colonised, the need for built warrens drops accordingly. We always discuss this at the quotation stage.
How many wild rabbits should be released for a successful restocking?
Think in warrens rather than hectares: 3 to 5 rabbits per artificial warren, one warren per 2 to 3 hectares of genuinely suitable ground, and repeated releases over 2 to 3 years rather than a single operation. A dense, well-sheltered nucleus on a limited sector beats a batch spread thinly across the whole ground. The exact number is settled with us by telephone, from your suitable acreage, your soil and the predation pressure.
How do I recognise a true wild rabbit?
The wild rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) is the true wild species: 1.2 to 1.5 kg as an adult, uniform grey-brown coat, ears shorter than a hare's, living in colonies in a warren dug into the ground. A released domestic rabbit does not survive in the wild; GIBIS breeds only pure French strains suited to restocking.
